He had previously been part of the coaching staff of the Indianapolis Colts, contributing as a defensive backs coach during their Super Bowl XLI victory in 2007. Despite stepping away, Williams expressed his desire to return to coaching in the future, stating, “I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for.
After taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again.” Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus did not provide further details on the situation, indicating that he had no updates to share. Eberflus, who is 53 years old, assumed defensive play-calling responsibilities in Williams’ absence during the game against the Buccaneers and plans to continue in this role when the Bears face the Kansas City Chiefs on the road.
Eberflus, who previously served as the Colts’ defensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021, had Williams as the safeties coach during his tenure in Indianapolis. He expressed confidence in the Bears’ defense, citing their experience and suggesting that the absence of a defensive coordinator would not be a significant issue.
The Chicago Bears have encountered a challenging start to the season with a 0-2 record, and criticism has been directed at various aspects of the team, including quarterback Justin Fields, wide receiver Chase Claypool, and Coach Eberflus.
Fields has publicly hinted at a disconnect with the coaching staff, particularly in regard to his on-field performance.
