Let’s face it: promoting “the best cheap apartments in New York City” is similar to touting the best sci-fi flicks available on Netflix. Netflix has a ton of good to great movies and TV shows, but it might be challenging to find amazing sci-fi titles right now.
However, despite our best efforts to avoid linking science fiction with fantasy, we have a terrific selection of sci-fi movies that are currently accessible to view on Netflix. Even if some of these films may contain fewer sci-fi elements than others, each one of them satisfies the requirement in its own special way. To help you further refine them, we’re also providing Rotten Tomatoes critic rating scores. Even if we do not believe that the website that aggregates reviews is the ultimate arbiter of taste, it can be helpful.
The Top Sci-Fi Movies on Netflix Right Now
Some of these movies are at the top of this list because they are going to end, and we want you to view them while you still have the chance. Watch these top sci-fi films on Netflix while you still have the chance!
1. Spider-Man 2 (2004)
I would categorize Spider-Man 2 as “super science-fiction,” a kind of science fiction that only appears in comic book movies because the protagonist and antagonist first encountered each other in a lab. A fellow scientist named Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) gives Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), who is separated from his companions, a sense of fellowship. If only Doc’s research hadn’t gone horribly awry.
Spider-Man 2 is hailed for its compelling tale of a hero in need of redemption who manages to ascend to greatness and is one of the best comic book movies on Netflix. The film, which was directed by Evil Dead’s Sam Raimi, is exceptional in its genre because of the amazing horror sequences it contains.
2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
The iconic action/sci-fi movie Terminator 2: Judgement Day still has an impact on audiences today as the T-800 Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) travels back in time to stop the AI takeover that would otherwise lead to humanity’s extinction under Skynet. In order to save the planet, he must stand up for John Connor (Edward Furlong), Sarah’s (Linda Hamilton) son.
Judgment Day is one of the best science fiction movies ever made, with fantastic action, amazing special effects for the period, and top-notch performances. The real villain is Robert Patrick’s deadly T-1000 Terminator, albeit Arnie’s deadpan delivery stays in our memories.
3. Pitch Black (2000)
Not just because he plays Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Vin Diesel is excellent in space. We first met Richard B. Riddick in Pitch Black, a survivor in a world without water. Despite his cool exterior, he is a convicted felon, making him a true anti-hero.
In spite of having had his eyes changed to allow him to see in the dark, Riddick has another distinctive flaw: he must wear goggles outside since the light pains him so badly. Riddick has the unfortunate situation of living in a planet where the sun never sets.
4. The Adam Project (2022)
Adam Reed, a fighter pilot played by Ryan Reynolds, ultimately wants to travel across time and save the world. However, he makes a mistake in his course and dies in 2022, where he encounters a younger version of himself (Walker Scobell) who needs help managing his own life. While clearly evoking both Back to the Future and a big action movie, The Adam Project is a stand-alone movie.
5. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
The interactive nature of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch sets it apart from the other choices on this list. Stefan (Fionn Whitehead), a video game programmer, is turning a well-known interactive “choose your own adventure” book into a video game.
However, since Stefan is disappointed with how the game is being received by the general public, you have the option to try again. Stefan’s dark path begins here, where he first begins to be concerned about someone (you) having control over him.
6. The Platform (2020)
The Platform is a dystopian horror movie with slightly more muted sci-fi elements where prisons have become even less compassionate. Food is distributed by a massive floating platform that descends through a number of cells stacked on top of one another.
The system is so faulty that the lower-level offenders, who receive meals last, are forced to bet everything. Two people share each cell. The Platform gives off the impression of what could happen if a Black Mirror episode grew even darker.
7. The Mitchells vs The Machines (2021)
Families can now watch a handful of the movies on this list together, but there aren’t many that really fit the family-friendly genre. Netflix Original can save parents and children everywhere. The Machines versus The Mitchells. Before Katie (Jacobson) leaves for college, this family takes one last vacation before they set out on their journey.
Given that her father (McBride) believed the family needs a vacation, Katie is startled by this one. And he is tired of his children being around technology all the time. Then, when a race of super-powered robots appears, Dad’s nightmares come true. Only through teamwork will the Mitchells be able to overcome the Machines.
8. End of Evangelion (1997)
Shinji, get in the Eva. Although you should watch the first season first—don’t worry, it’s on Netflix—you should also watch Shinji and his fellow Eva pilots’ most recent voyage when you’re ready.
For its seamless blending of action and surrealism, End of Evangelion, a blockbuster hit at the box office and on home video, garnered a ton of favorable reviews. The sexual elements in it, especially in the opening sequence, also courted criticism.
9. Don’t Look Up (2021)
Don’t Look Up, a comedy about the world’s absurd response to an earth-threating calamity that resembles the way climate change has so far played out, is considered more science fact than fiction by some. In any case, when this Netflix ensemble comedy first appeared.
Because it painted a bullseye on everyone’s back to demonstrate how complicit everyone can be, it quickly gained popularity. Stranger still, a millionaire thinks we shouldn’t destroy the comet that is heading for Earth because it contains rare components that are worth trillions of dollars to be mined.
